Route 28 and the Mt. Silver Gate

After all 16 badges and Oak's blessing in Pallet, reach Route 28 beyond Victory Road (SurfWater + WaterfallWater to get there). The gatehouse opens to Mt. Silver — the toughest area in the game. There's a Pokémon Center at the foot of the mountain; treat it as your base.

Heads up: Mt. Silver is a long, item-rich cave that needs FlashNormal, SurfWater, Strength, and WaterfallWater to fully traverse. Wild levels here are Lv 40+, and there's no healing once you start climbing toward Red — stock heavily.

Mt. Silver — Encounters and Larvitar

Mt. Silver has some of the best catches in the game, including the only Larvitar line in Crystal.

PokemonTypeNotes
LarvitarRock/Ground★ Only place in Crystal; Tyranitar is a postgame monster.
UrsaringNormal★ Huge Attack; great physical sweeper.
DonphanGroundSturdy Ground — useful vs Red's Pikachu.
Sneasel / MisdreavusDark/GhostCoverage catches.
Pikachu / Magneton / GravelerVariousElectric/Rock options.
Optimal call: Grab a Larvitar if you want Tyranitar for the postgame, and a Donphan — Ground is immune to Pikachu's Electric and gives you a safe lead against Red. Check the spread in Team Analysis.

The Grind Plan

Red's team sits at Lv 73-81. You don't need to match that, but you want a six in the low-to-mid 60s minimum, with great coverage and a big bag of healing. Efficient leveling options:

MethodWhy
Elite Four rematchesBest XP per run; their teams scale up after your first clear.
Rival rematch (Mon/Wed)High-level six at the Indigo Plateau.
Mt. Silver wild + trainersLv 40+ encounters on-site while you explore.
Exp. Share + vitaminsSpread XP and max out a star sweeper's stats.
Optimal call: Aim for Lv 62-68 across your six, carry 10+ Full Restores, a few Revives/Max Revives, and the Sacred Ash from Ho-Oh as an emergency full-party heal. Red has no healing items, so superior bulk + heals wins the war of attrition.

Red’s Team — Full Analysis

Gym puzzle: None — just survive the climb. Red disappears after you beat him (and returns for a rematch once you re-clear the Elite Four).

Pikachu Pikachu Lv 81 MovesCharmQuick AttackThunderboltThunder ReadGround is immune to its Electric — a Donphan/Golem lead walls it. Fast and frail otherwise.
Espeon Espeon Lv 73 MovesMud-SlapReflectSwiftPsychic ReadDark (Tyranitar/Sneasel/Umbreon Crunch) one-shots it.
Snorlax Snorlax Lv 75 MovesAmnesiaSnoreRestBody Slam ReadFighting (Heracross/Machamp); huge HP, so hit hard or it Rests.
Venusaur Venusaur Lv 77 MovesSunny DayGiga DrainSynthesisSolarBeam ReadGrass/Poison — Fire, Flying, Ice, or Psychic. Watch Sunny Day → instant SolarBeam.
Charizard Charizard Lv 77 MovesFlamethrowerWing AttackSlashFire Spin ReadFire/Flying — Rock is 4×; Water/Electric also strong.
Blastoise Blastoise Lv 77 MovesRain DanceSurfBlizzardWhirlpool ReadWater — Electric or Grass ends it.

Battle plan: Lead with a Ground-type to neutralize the Pikachu, then rotate type answers: Dark for Espeon, Fighting for Snorlax, Fire/Ice/Psychic for Venusaur, Rock/Electric for Charizard, Electric/Grass for Blastoise. There's no AI healing, so steady super-effective hits + your own Full Restores grind him down. Watch the weather turns: rain favors Blastoise, sun favors Charizard and Venusaur.

Heads up: This is the climax — overprepare. A Ground lead, a Dark hitter, an Ice/Electric special attacker, and a Fighting body cover the whole team. Save before the summit and don't be shy with Full Restores.

Team Recommendations

Ground (Donphan/Golem/Dugtrio): ★ Hard-walls Red's lead Pikachu and chips Charizard/Blastoise.
Dark (Tyranitar/Sneasel/Umbreon): Deletes Espeon; Tyranitar also tanks Charizard.
Ice/Electric special attacker (Lapras/Jolteon/Lanturn): Covers Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur.
Fighting (Heracross/Machamp): Breaks Snorlax before it Rests.
Your starter + Dragonite: Strong neutral closers with Full Restore support.

Time / Day Window

Nothing on Mt. Silver is time-gated. If you're grinding via the rival, his Indigo-Plateau rematch is Monday/Wednesday; the Elite Four can be re-run any day for XP. Red is always waiting at the summit once you reach him.

Legendary Note

No legendaries on Mt. Silver itself. If you completed Phase 11, you've caught everything Crystal offers in-game — Lugia, Ho-Oh, the three beasts, and (platform permitting) Celebi. Final tally lives in the Legendary Reference.

HM Update

No new HMs. Mt. Silver demands FlashNormal, SurfWater, Strength, and WaterfallWater to reach Red — keep them slotted on bulky members, but make sure your six summit team is built for the fight, not for HM duty. That's the full seven-HM set used to the end.

Phase 12 Checklist

  • Entered Mt. Silver with Oak's permission and all 16 badges.
  • Caught Larvitar (and a Donphan/Ursaring) on the way up.
  • Ground your six to the low-to-mid 60s with full healing stock.
  • Climbed to the summit and beat Red — Crystal complete!
  • (Optional) Re-cleared the Elite Four to set up the Red rematch.
