Route 34 — Day-Care Approach

South of Ilex, Route 34 runs down to Goldenrod past the Day-Care (drop two Pokémon here to breed/level). Catch an Abra if you want the Psychic powerhouse line.

PokemonTypeTimeLevelsNotes
AbraPsychicAll day8–12★ Teleports — use a status/quick KO to catch. Kadabra at 16, Alakazam by trade.
DrowzeePsychicAll day9–12Hypno; solid bulky Psychic, no trade needed.
DittoNormalAll day10–12Breeding helper at the Day-Care.
Rattata / Ekans / SandshrewNormal/Poison/GroundAll day8–12Filler.
Optimal call: Drowzee is the no-trade Psychic pick (becomes Hypno); take Abra only if you can trade for Alakazam. Either gives you a Psychic answer to the Poison/Fighting you'll meet around Koga and Chuck.

Goldenrod City — The Hub of Johto

Goldenrod is the biggest city in the game and a one-stop shop. Hit these before the gym:

Eevee
Eevee (free gift)
Normal · From Bill · ★ Espeon (day) / Umbreon (night) via happiness
Bill (house by the Pokémon Center): Gives you a free Eevee. ★ Raise its happiness and level it in the day → Espeon (elite Special attacker) or at night → Umbreon (elite wall). Both are top-tier and need no stone.
Dept. Store: Five floors of items + a rooftop. Stock Super Potions, status heals, and TMs. Saturday has a discount sale.
Bike Shop: Free Bicycle — much faster overworld travel.
Underground Tunnel: Haircut brothers raise happiness (speeds Eevee/Crobat/Golbat evolutions). Daily.
Flower Shop: After the Plain Badge (and talking to Floria on Route 36), the florist gives the SquirtBottle for the Sudowoodo.
Game Corner & Radio Tower: Coins for prize TMs; grab the radio upgrade for your Pokégear (it pings the Snorlax flute later in Kanto).
Optimal call: Grab the Eevee first thing and decide day/night based on your team's hole — Espeon if you lack special offense, Umbreon if you want a wall. Map your final six in the Team Randomizer and check coverage in Team Analysis.

National Park — Bug-Catching Contest

North through Route 35 is the National Park. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday it hosts the Bug-Catching Contest: you get 20 Park Balls and one capture counts — the rarest/highest catch wins prizes (Sun Stone, Everstone, berries).

Contest catchTypeNotes
Scyther / PinsirBug★ Rare top prizes — a free Scyther/Pinsir if you nab one.
Caterpie / Weedle / MetapodBugCommon; low score.
Venonat / Paras / LedybaBugMid-tier scorers.
Optimal call: If it's a contest day, enter once — winning hands you a Sun Stone (Bellossom/Sunflora) and a free rare Bug. If it isn't a contest day, skip the park and don't wait unless you specifically want the prize.

Route 36 — Sudowoodo

North of Goldenrod, a "tree" blocks Route 36 — it's a Sudowoodo. Talk to Floria standing nearby, then collect the SquirtBottle from the Goldenrod Flower Shop and spray the tree to trigger the battle.

Sudowoodo
Sudowoodo
Rock · Route 36 · Lv 20 · one-time encounter
Missable: The Route 36 Sudowoodo is a single Lv 20 encounter — if you knock it out you can't get this one again. Save first, weaken with a non-super-effective move, and catch it if you want one. (You must clear it either way to open Route 36 north.)

Team Recommendations

Your roster should now be filling out. Strong adds this phase:

Eevee → Espeon/Umbreon: ★ The best pickup of the phase — pick the eeveelution that patches your team.
Drowzee/Abra: Psychic coverage for the Fighting/Poison gyms ahead.
Contest Scyther/Pinsir: Optional power adds if you win the Bug Contest.
Ghost (Gastly/Haunter): If you caught one earlier, it hard-walls Whitney's Miltank (immune to her Normal moves).

Gym Strategy - Whitney, The Normal Leader

Gym puzzle: Simple — a couple of trainers and a short path.

Goldenrod City Gym Leader

Plain Badge

Whitney, Goldenrod City Gym

Miltank is the wall: Rollout snowballs, Milk Drink resets chip, and Attract can stall male attackers cold.

Clefairy Clefairy Lv 18 MovesDoubleslapMimicEncoreMetronome ReadAnnoying but soft — KO it fast.
Miltank Miltank Lv 20 MovesRolloutAttractStompMilk Drink Read★ The wall: Rollout snowballs, Milk Drink heals 50%, Attract locks opposite-gender attackers.

Why Miltank is hard: Rollout snowballs fast, Attract can steal turns from male attackers, and Milk Drink resets your progress.

How to break it: Best answer is a Ghost-type (Gastly/Haunter/Gengar) to blank her main offense, then chip with a non-Normal attack. Failing that, use Fighting pressure from Heracross or Machop. Lead a female or genderless attacker if possible, hit hard before Rollout ramps, and bring Super Potions.

Heads up: If Rollout lands twice unanswered it can sweep you — reset the snowball by switching to a Ghost (immune) or by KOing/forcing a miss. This is the toughest fight of early Johto; go in at Lv 20+.

Time / Day Window

WindowWhat it gates
Tue / Thu / SatBug-Catching Contest at National Park (free rare Bug + Sun Stone).
SaturdayGoldenrod Dept. Store sale — discounted items.
Day vs NightEevee evolves to Espeon (day) or Umbreon (night) at high happiness — level it during the period you want.
DailyUnderground haircut brothers boost happiness (faster Eevee/Crobat).

Legendary Note

No legendary triggers in Goldenrod. The next big beat is right ahead: in Phase 4 you reach Ecruteak and the Burned Tower, where Raikou, Entei, and Suicune wake and the roaming hunt begins. If you collected an Apricorn Fast Ball from Kurt, keep it handy for the beasts. Full timing in the Legendary Reference.

HM Update

Enabled this phase: the Plain Badge lets your Pokémon use HM04 Strength in the field — but you don't pick up the Strength HM itself until Olivine City (Phase 6), so there's no new HM to slot yet. Coverage: FlashNormal + Cut. You also gain the Bicycle for speed. SurfWater comes next phase in Ecruteak.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Picked up the free Eevee from Bill; chose day/night for Espeon vs Umbreon.
  • Grabbed the Bicycle and stocked the Dept. Store.
  • (Contest day) Entered the Bug-Catching Contest for a Sun Stone + rare Bug.
  • Got the SquirtBottle and resolved the Sudowoodo on Route 36.
  • Broke the Miltank wall → Plain Badge + TM45 AttractNormal (Strength now usable).
