Routes 35-37 — North to Ecruteak

From Goldenrod, head north through Route 35, past the National Park, then Routes 36–37 to Ecruteak. Good catches here, including Crystal's main early Fire option.

PokemonTypeTimeLevelsNotes
GrowlitheFireDay (R36/37)~13–15★ Crystal's realistic early Fire — Arcanine via Fire Stone. (Vulpix is unobtainable in Crystal.)
YanmaBug/FlyingDay (R35)~12–14Speedy; SpAtk niche.
Nidoran♂ / Nidoran♀PoisonAll day12–14Nidoking/Nidoqueen via Moon Stone — strong coverage mons.
StantlerNormalR37~14Decent Normal attacker.
Pidgey / Abra / DrowzeeVariousAll day12–15Repeats from Route 34/35.
Optimal call: If your starter isn't Cyndaquil, grab a Growlithe — it's the cleanest Fire answer in Crystal for the Bug/Grass/Ice/Steel types you'll face (Morty's lead-in, Jasmine, Pryce). Run your coverage through Team Analysis.

Ecruteak City — Dance Theatre and SurfWater

Ecruteak sits between the Burned Tower and the Tin Tower. Two stops before the gym:

Dance Theatre (Kimono Girls): Five Kimono Girls perform here; clearing their event is tied to the Suicune storyline and unlocks the SurfWater gift.
SurfWater house: A gentleman gives you HM03 SurfWater — your Fog Badge lets you use it immediately. SurfWater opens water routes everywhere and is excellent STAB.
Heads up: The Tin Tower is sealed for now — you can't climb it until much later (the Rainbow Wing for Ho-Oh in Phase 7, and Suicune's capture). Don't waste time trying to enter.

Burned Tower — The Beasts Awaken

Head into the Burned Tower and down to the basement. Here the three legendary beasts lie dormant — and as you approach (with Eusine, the Suicune-obsessed traveler, on the scene) they wake and scatter.

Suicune
The Trio wakes
Raikou + Entei roam · Suicune flees (fixed catch later)
Missable management: From this moment Raikou and Entei roam Johto — they appear randomly on routes and flee turn one. Don't KO them. Suicune bolts and becomes a fixed encounter you'll catch via the Eusine arc (Phase 5 onward) — see the Legendary Reference. Now's the time that Apricorn Fast Ball from Kurt earns its keep.

Rival Battle — Burned Tower

Your rival challenges you at the Burned Tower. Two ghosts, an Electric, and his ace.

Optimal call: His Haunter is Ghost/Poison — your Espeon/Drowzee Psychic hits it 2× and also handles his ace if you picked Cyndaquil. Lead with your Psychic and you control most of this fight.

Team Recommendations

Heading into Morty, prioritize Psychic and Dark coverage:

Espeon (or Drowzee/Hypno): ★ Psychic is super-effective on Morty's whole Ghost/Poison lineup — your single best tool this phase.
Umbreon / a Dark move: Dark (Faint AttackDark/BiteDark) is super-effective on Ghosts and resists their Shadow BallGhost.
Growlithe (optional Fire): Patches Bug/Steel/Ice matchups for the next few gyms.
SurfWater user: Whoever carries HM03 now doubles as a strong Water attacker.

Gym Strategy - Morty, The Ghost Leader

Gym puzzle: Walk the invisible floor path (follow the lit tiles) to reach Morty.

Haunter Haunter Lv 21 MovesHypnosisMimicCurseNight Shade ReadSleep + Curse drain.
Gengar Gengar Lv 25 MovesHypnosisShadow BallMean LookDream Eater Read★ Ace — Hypnosis then Dream Eater; Shadow Ball hits hard.

Why it's tricky: The whole gym leans on sleep, trapping, and Curse chip. Their Ghost/Poison typing is immune to Normal, so Normal attackers are dead weight.

How to win:Psychic is 2× on every one of his Pokémon (they're all Ghost/Poison) — an Espeon/Drowzee/Hypno sweeps. Dark is also strong. Carry a couple of Awakenings, avoid Normal attackers, and KO Gengar before it gets a sleep loop going.

Heads up: If something gets put to sleep, swap or wake it — a sleeping lead plus Mean LookNormal can stall you out. Lead with a fast Psychic to dictate the fight.

Time / Day Window

WindowWhat it gates
Story triggerThe Burned Tower scene starts the roaming beasts (Raikou/Entei) — they can appear any time of day on Johto routes from now.
DayGrowlithe on Routes 36/37 is day-only.
Tue/Thu/SatBug Contest still runs (National Park) if you want another go.

Legendary Note

This is the phase that starts the legendary hunt. At the Burned Tower, Raikou, Entei, and Suicune wake. Raikou and Entei now roam Johto (random route encounters, flee on turn one — trap with Mean LookNormal/Spider WebBug or chip and Fast Ball). Suicune runs off and will be your fixed, missable Tin Tower catch via the Eusine arc that ramps up in Phase 5. Read the full plan in the Legendary Reference.

HM Update

Unlocked this phase: HM03 SurfWater (Ecruteak), usable thanks to the Fog Badge. This is a major mobility and offense unlock — water routes, new fishing spots, and a strong STAB attack. Coverage: FlashNormal + Cut + SurfWater. Put SurfWater on a Water-type you're keeping (Quagsire, Slowpoke, your Totodile line) rather than a throwaway slave. FlyFlying comes next phase from Chuck's town.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Caught a Growlithe (if you need Fire) on Routes 36/37.
  • Got HM03 SurfWater in Ecruteak.
  • Triggered the Burned Tower scene — beasts are now roaming.
  • Beat the Burned Tower rival battle.
  • Cleared Morty with Psychic/Dark → Fog Badge + TM30 Shadow BallGhost.
  • (Optional) Started chipping/Fast-Balling Raikou or Entei when they appear.
