Routes 38-39 — West to Olivine

West of Ecruteak, Routes 38–39 lead to Olivine, past the Moomoo Farm (feed the sick Miltank Berries for cheap Moomoo Milk healing). Big news here: this is where Crystal finally hands you an Electric-type.

Optimal call: Grab a Magnemite — it's the Electric coverage you couldn't get from Mareep, and Magneton's typing walls Jasmine's lead Magnemites and Kanto's Flying/Water leaders. Sanity-check the fit in Team Analysis.

Olivine City — The Locked Lighthouse

In Olivine, gym leader Jasmine is up the Glitter Lighthouse tending a sick Ampharos ("Amphy") that powers the beacon. She won't battle until it's cured — and the medicine is in Cianwood, across the water.

Heads up: Don't grind here expecting a gym — Olivine's Mineral Badge waits until Phase 6. Climb the lighthouse, talk to Jasmine, then SurfWater to Cianwood for the cure.

Routes 40-41 — SurfWater to Cianwood

SurfWater southwest from Olivine across Routes 40–41 to Cianwood. Fishing here gives Crystal's other Electric path.

Missable (later): You'll SurfWater right past the Whirl Islands on Route 41 — that's Lugia's lair, but it needs the Silver Wing + WhirlpoolWater and is a Kanto-postgame trip (Phase 10/11). Note it and keep moving.

Cianwood City — Pharmacy and Suicune

Cianwood is a small island town with the medicine you need and a Fighting gym.

Pharmacy: Pick up the SecretPotion — the cure for Olivine's Amphy (you'll use it next phase). The pharmacy also stocks healing items.

Chuck's wife (outside the gym): After you beat Chuck she gives you HM02 FlyFlying — fast travel between visited towns.

Eusine Battle — Cianwood Ledge

On the ledge north of Cianwood, Suicune appears, studies you, and bolts across the water. Eusine — the Suicune fanatic from the Burned Tower — shows up and challenges you to prove himself. This is the one Eusine battle in the game.

Optimal call: Two of his three carry HypnosisPsychic — bring Awakenings or a sleep-immune lead. A Dark/Ghost move handles the Haunter, and a Ground-type (or anything fast) takes Electrode before it Explodes-adjacent shenanigans. Beating Eusine is mandatory to continue the Suicune chase.

Team Recommendations

Espeon / Psychic mon: ★ Psychic is super-effective on Chuck's Fighting pair — your cleanest gym answer again.

Magnemite (new): Electric coverage at last; resists Flying and walls Steel.

A Flying or Psychic lead for Chuck; avoid leading with Normal/Rock/Dark (Fighting hits those hard).

SurfWater user stays valuable across the water routes.

How to win: ★ Psychic destroys both — Primeape is pure Fighting and Poliwrath is Water/Fighting, so an Espeon/Hypno tears through the gym. Flying-types also hit hard. Carry Awakenings, and KO Poliwrath before it sets up its guaranteed-confusion combo.

Heads up: DynamicPunchFighting confusion can lose you the fight if Poliwrath lingers. Open with a Psychic attacker and remove Poliwrath fast rather than tanking hits.

Time / Day Window

Nothing is hard time-gated this phase. The roaming Raikou/Entei can still appear on Johto routes as you travel — keep a Fast Ball ready. The Bug Contest (Tue/Thu/Sat) remains available back east if you want it.

Legendary Note

The Suicune arc advances: it appears on the Cianwood ledge and flees, triggering the mandatory Eusine battle. You still can't catch Suicune yet — its single catchable encounter is the Tin Tower foyer, which opens after you beat Pryce and clear Team Rocket from the Goldenrod Radio Tower (you'll get the Clear Bell, then defeat the Wise Trio). That's Phase 7. You'll also spot Suicune again on Route 42 heading toward Mahogany. Meanwhile Raikou and Entei keep roaming. Full chain in the Legendary Reference.

HM Update

Unlocked this phase: HM02 FlyFlying (Chuck's wife), usable with the Storm Badge — huge quality-of-life for backtracking. Coverage: FlashNormal + Cut + SurfWater + FlyFlying. Teach FlyFlying to a Flying-type you're keeping (Pidgeot, Fearow, Crobat, Noctowl) so it doubles as travel and a STAB attacker. Strength's HM is your next pickup, in Olivine (Phase 6).
