Shalour City → Coumarine City Gym (Ramos) — and the Surf/Fly unlocks.

Route Map

Phase 4 is short distance-wise (one route + one city) but content-heavy. You'll unlock Surf at the start and Fly in Coumarine, opening up backtrack options across the whole region. Plan a side trip to Azure Bay for Ampharosite (Mega Stone) before tackling Route 12.

Shalour Exit + Surf Gift

As you step out of Shalour heading toward Route 12, your rival (Calem/Serena) intercepts you in a flower garden cutscene and hands you HM03 Surf. No battle, just the handoff.

★ ★ ★ HM03 Surf — auto-given by rival on Shalour east exit. Teach it to any Water Pokémon (Frogadier/Greninja, Lapras, Squirtle/Wartortle, Marill/Azumarill, Wailmer, etc.). Requires the Rumble Badge to use outside battle — which you just earned. Surf unlocks Azure Bay, makes Wailmer/Lapras/Mantyke catchable, and reveals dozens of hidden item spots across the region.

Best Surf user for Phase 4

PokémonReasoning
Greninja/Frogadier★ Best starter pick — your offensive Water already, and Surf becomes a 90-power STAB nuke.
Lapras (Phase 2 Ambrette gift)If you kept her, Surf joins Hydro Pump/Ice Beam coverage. Lapras is your safe-tank Surf user.
Azumarill (Marill evo)If you raised one. Belly Drum + Aqua Jet is a different gameplay style, but Surf is solid filler.
Blastoise (Squirtle Mega)If you took Squirtle from Sycamore. Mega Blastoise + Surf + Mega Launcher Water Pulse is brutal.

Azure Bay + Sea Spirit’s Den

Now fully accessible with Surf. The bay sits south of Shalour — surf west off the beach to reach the islands. The Sea Spirit's Den is the centerpiece, with a Mega Stone gift inside.

The Ampharosite hunt

★ ★ Ampharosite Mega Stone — Sea Spirit's Den (Azure Bay south island). Surf south from the beach, hug the western edge, you'll find a small island with a cave entrance. Inside, an old man hands you the Ampharosite. ★ Mega Ampharos is Electric/Dragon with Mold Breaker — one of the best Mega specials in the game and a key endgame option.

Route 12 — Fourrage Road

A pastoral north-bound route lined with berry fields and a Skiddo ranch. You can ride Skiddo on the ranch portion to skip trainers and traverse faster — but you'll miss XP. Lots of items, decent wild encounters, and a key Pinsir/Heracross version split.

Version exclusive — the big Phase 4 split: Pinsir vs Heracross

X exclusivePinsir on Route 12. Bug. Mega Stone (Pinsirite) post-game.
Y exclusiveHeracross on Route 12. Bug/Fighting. Mega Stone (Heracronite) post-game. Heracross is significantly stronger in-game — its Bug/Fighting STAB combo is incredible coverage, and Megahorn at Lv 35 is a 120-power Bug nuke.
RecommendationIf you're on Y, catch a Heracross now and slot it into your team — it's one of the strongest Phase 4–8 picks. If you're on X, Pinsir is fine but slightly weaker; Wonder Trade for a Heracross if you want both.

Trainers on Route 12

TrainerRosterNotes
Pokémon Breeder AmalaSeviper Lv 27, Miltank Lv 29Seviper's Venoshock + Bite. Miltank's Rollout snowballs — break Rollout chains with a switch.
Youngster AidanYanma Lv 27, Mothim Lv 27, Whirlipede Lv 27Triple Bug roster. ★ Fletchinder + Flame Charge wipes the whole team.
Pokémon Breeder FosterZangoose Lv 27, Tauros Lv 29Both physical Normal. Zangoose's Crush Claw lowers Def.
Fisherman MurrayMagikarp Lv 24 ×6★ Free 6× XP. Splash spam. Bring a single mon for full XP-share boost — easy levels for any underleveled bench.
Swimmer (varies)Water Pokémon Lv 25–28Often in the river section. Bring Grass/Electric.
Backpacker (varies)Lv 27 generic Linoone or similarGeneric single-mon trainer.
★ Skiddo ranch: The mid-route Skiddo ranch lets you ride Skiddo through the grass section. Skiddo plows through tall grass without triggering wild encounters AND it lets you skip past trainers without engaging. Use it if you're rushing; don't use it if you want full XP.

Coumarine City (Lower / Seaside)

The waterfront half of Coumarine. Yachts in the harbor, a hotel, an incense shop, and the monorail station. Your first stop is the Pokémon Center; then loot.

Lower Coumarine NPCs & gifts

Old man (house near lighthouse): ★ Gives you a Silk Scarf — held item, +20% to Normal moves. Great for Snorlax, Talonflame's Return, Diggersby's Return.
Incense shopkeeper (seaside stall): Sells various Incense items — Sea Incense, Lax Incense, Pure Incense, Rose Incense, Rock Incense. Each is a held item that either boosts a type or alters breeding evolution. Skip unless breeding.
"Help yourself" berry stall: One free berry per day. Random rotation — could be any berry.
Fisherman by the yachts: Gives you the Good Rod (alternate source if you missed it in Cyllage/Shalour).
Girl with Marill (Coumarine Hotel, ground floor): ★ ★ ★ Gives you a Lucky Egg. One of the most important items in the game — held item that gives +50% XP gain. Stick it on your weakest bench mon and they'll catch up in hours instead of days.
Girl (Hotel upstairs middle room): Gives you a Smile Ribbon. Contest decoration; pure flavor unless you're into Pokémon-Amie.
Pokémon Center vendor: Stock includes Hyper Potions, Revives, Super Repels.
★ ★ ★ Missable — Lucky Egg: The Lucky Egg from the Marill girl at the Coumarine Hotel is by far the most important Phase 4 missable. +50% XP gain on the holder. Use it to power-level your Mega Lucario, fresh-caught Mareep/Heracross, or any underleveled bench mon. Easy to walk past — the hotel is on the seaside, NOT the gym.

Monorail + Fly Gift

Inside the Monorail Station, one of Professor Sycamore's lab assistants is waiting with HM02 Fly.

★ ★ ★ HM02 Fly — given inside Coumarine Monorail Station by Sycamore's assistant. Teach to any Flying-type (Fletchinder/Talonflame, Pidgeotto, Charizard with Charizardite Y, etc.). Requires the Plant Badge to use outside battle — so you'll get the HM now but can't Fly across Kalos until after Ramos. Once unlocked, Fly to any visited town from the menu.

Other Monorail Station NPCs

Guy at the monorail (upper station): Gives you a Metronome — held item that boosts a move's power +20% for each consecutive use of the same move (caps at 2× after 5 uses). Best on Pokémon spamming a single STAB.
Monorail itself: Free transit between Lower (seaside) and Upper (hilltop) Coumarine. Use freely — you can also walk via the hill path if you want trainer encounters.

Coumarine City (Upper / Hilltop)

The hill section of the city. Pokémon Center is here. Several gift NPCs, a TM quiz, and the Coumarine Gym at the top.

Upper Coumarine NPCs & gifts

Mimic girl (in a house): Plays a sound and asks you to identify which Pokémon in your party made it. Correct answer = Poké Toy. Pure flavor item.
Punk at the Route 13 gatehouse: Gives you Black Sludge — held item, restores 1/16 HP per turn for Poison-types, damages 1/8 HP otherwise. ★ ★ Equip on a Poison-type endgame mon (Crobat, Roserade, Nidoking, Dragalge) for free recovery.
TM Quiz Girl (cape west of the Hotel): Answer her trivia question correctly for a TM. Possible rewards rotate daily: TM100 Confide, TM62 Acrobatics, TM63 Embargo, TM92 Trick Room. ★ TM62 Acrobatics is the best reward — 110-power Flying move if the holder has no item.
Pokémon Center: Standard heal + Mart upgrade.

Pre-Gym Rival Multi-Battle

Before the gym entrance, your rival (Calem/Serena) intercepts you and proposes a multi-battle: you and your rival as a team against Tierno + Trevor. This is the canonical "all five protagonists fight together" moment, structured as a 2v2 double battle.

The multi-battle

SideTrainerRoster
You + AllyCalem/Serena (ally)AI uses their full party — Floette, Honedge, and starter (Lv 30+)
OpponentTiernoLikely Crawdaunt Lv 30 + Roserade Lv 30 (rosters approximate; exact lineup poorly documented)
OpponentTrevorLikely Aerodactyl Lv 30 + Florges Lv 30 (rosters approximate; exact lineup poorly documented)
Source caveat: The exact Pokémon Tierno and Trevor use at this Coumarine pre-gym multi-battle isn't well-documented across the major XY walkthrough sources I could verify. Their Route 19 late-game rosters are confirmed, but the Coumarine pre-gym specifics vary. Expect their teams to be around Lv 29–31 with type variety — bring coverage.
Multi-battle tip: Your rival AI picks moves that boost both teammates (Helping Hand, Light Screen) and tends to target whichever opponent's mon is weaker. Lead with a sweeper (Mega Lucario, Hawlucha, Pangoro) — let the rival mop up clean-up.

Coumarine Gym — Ramos, the Plant Leader

R

Ramos — Coumarine City Gym

Grass-type · Elderly gardener · Specialty: setup-and-stall with bulky Grass tanks

Gym puzzle: A vine-based obstacle course built on a giant central tree. You climb vine ropes between platforms, sometimes swinging across gaps. Four Pokémon Ranger trainers stand on the vine platforms — defeat them in roughly this order to reach Ramos at the top.

Pokémon Ranger BrookeRoselia Lv 30, Wormadam Lv 30Roselia's Sludge Bomb + Mega Drain; Wormadam is Bug/Steel form (likely). Fire melts both.
Pokémon Ranger TwiggyGloom Lv 29, Exeggutor Lv 31Sleep Powder threat on Gloom; Exeggutor is Grass/Psychic — 2× weak to Fire/Bug/Flying/Dark/Ghost/Ice. Use Hawlucha/Talonflame.
Pokémon Ranger MauriceFerroseed Lv 29, Lombre Lv 29, Carnivine Lv 29Triple roster. Ferroseed (Grass/Steel) is bulky — Fire 4× super-effective. Lombre is Water/Grass. Carnivine is pure Grass with Bite.

Threat assessment

PokémonThreatWhy
JumpluffMediumSpeedy + Cotton Spore lowers your Speed brutally. If you don't OHKO it, you eat 2+ turns of chip while paralyzed/slowed.
WeepinbellMediumSleep Powder shuts down a sweeper. Lum Berry / Status guard is critical.
GogoatHigh★ Ace. 5'10" tall with 80 HP / 100 Atk / 70 Def / 68 Sp.A / 70 Sp.D / 60 Spd. Take Down hits like a truck but recoils. Leech Seed stalls. Bulldoze drops your Speed.

Recommended counters (in order)

CounterWhyRecommended moves
Talonflame / Fletchinder★ ★ ★ Fire and Flying both hit Ramos's Grass team super-effectively. Flame Charge / Aerial Ace = easy cleanup.Flame Charge, Aerial Ace
Mega Charizard X or Y★ ★ ★ Fire STAB destroys everything. Mega Charizard X with Tough Claws Flare Blitz is a one-shot generator.Flame Burst, Flare Blitz, Slash
Litleo / Pyroar★ Fire STAB. Hyper Voice (Lv 34) hits Substitutes through.Flame Charge, Hyper Voice (Lv 34+)
Braixen / Delphox (your starter)If you went Fennekin. Mystical Fire is its STAB — drops Sp.Atk.Mystical Fire, Flame Charge
Mega LucarioFighting/Steel — Bone Rush hits Grass neutrally but Mega Adaptability makes Power-Up Punch escalate. Lower-tier vs Grass; good if you have nothing else.Power-Up Punch, Swords Dance
HawluchaFlying STAB on Jumpluff, Acrobatics is good. Mediocre vs Gogoat — bring backup.Acrobatics, Flying Press
VivillonIf you raised one. Bug is 2× on Grass — Quiver Dance set up.Bug Buzz, Energy Ball (no, save), Psybeam

Avoid leading with

  • Greninja / Frogadier — Grass resists Water; you lose tempo. Bench until cleanup.
  • Lapras — Same logic. Lapras's Ice does hit Jumpluff for 4× though — niche use only.
  • Pancham / Pangoro — Fighting is neutral on Grass + 2× on Steel (Ferroseed). Mediocre.
  • Quilladin / Chesnaught (yours) — Grass mirror, slow chip war.
  • Marill / Azumarill — Same Water-resists-Grass problem.

Reward

  • Plant Badge — traded Pokémon up to Lv 70 obey (small upgrade), AND HM02 Fly is now usable outside battle. ★ Huge quality-of-life jump — Fly to any visited town from the menu.
  • TM86 Grass Knot — Grass move whose power scales with target's weight. Hits Heavy mons (Snorlax, Tyranitar, Wailord) for 120 power. Solid coverage on any Grass user.
  • Prize money — ~4,080 P.

Version Note Summary

Phase 4 — Pokémon X vs Pokémon Y differences

X exclusivePinsir on Route 12 (rare grass). Pure Bug. Has a Mega Stone (Pinsirite) — distributed post-game in vanilla XY. Hyper Cutter / Mold Breaker. Solid physical Bug attacker.
Y exclusiveHeracross on Route 12 (rare grass). Bug/Fighting — incredible STAB coverage. Mega Stone (Heracronite) — post-game. Guts / Moxie. ★ ★ Considered one of the best in-game catches in the entire main story.
RecommendationIf you're on Y, Heracross is a must-catch. Slot it in immediately, Lucky Egg it to Lv 35 for Megahorn, and it carries you through Phases 4–8. If you're on X, Pinsir is fine but consider Wonder Trading for a Heracross from a Y player. Both Pinsirite and Heracronite are post-game distributions, so the Mega Stones aren't a Phase-4 factor.
Same in bothRamos's gym roster, Surf/Fly gifts, Ampharosite, Lucky Egg, all gym trainers, and the rival multi-battle are identical between X and Y. Only the Pinsir/Heracross encounter differs.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Beat all four named Route 12 trainers (Amala, Aidan, Foster, Murray)
