Pokemon X and Y Phase 8 Iceberg Badge Walkthrough
Pokemon X and Y Phase 8 walkthrough: Mamoswine Road, Frost Cavern, Lysandre Labs, Team Flare HQ, Xerneas/Yveltal, Wulfric, and Iceberg Badge prep.
Pokemon X and Y optimal walkthrough
Anistar → Snowbelle Gym (Wulfric) — Team Flare's climax + the box legendary catch.
Route Map
Phase 8 is the climax — Team Flare's full reveal, the box legendary, then the final gym. Expect 5–8 hours of content. Order matters: Frost Cavern → Lysandre Labs → Geosenge HQ → Xerneas/Yveltal → Lysandre boss → Route 18 onward → Snowbelle → Pokémon Village → Wulfric.
Route 17 — Mamoswine Road
A snowstorm-buried route north of Anistar. Snow is so deep you can't walk — instead, you mount a rental Mamoswine and plow through. The Mamoswine also smashes large boulders. Light trainer density.
Wild Pokémon — Route 17

Dendemille stops
Frost Cavern + Abomasite
A multi-level ice cave north of Dendemille. Team Flare's first Phase 8 ambush happens here — Mable and Grunts are tormenting a wild Abomasnow to extract energy. Trevor joins you as an ally for the early fights.

| Various other Hex Maniac / Ice Trainer | Lv 40–45 generic ice teams | Scattered in cave corners. |
Items in Frost Cavern
| Item | Where |
|---|---|
| Abomasite ★ ★ | From the saved Abomasnow post-Mable battle |
| Never-Melt Ice | Visible — held item, +20% Ice moves |

| Various berries + held items (hidden) | Dowsing |
Lysandre Labs Raid
After leaving Frost Cavern, a Holo Clip from Lysandre interrupts you — he announces his plans publicly. Fly back to Lumiose, head to Lysandre Café, and check the bookshelf behind the waitress. The hidden door is now open. Lysandre Labs is a 4-floor elevator dungeon with all five Team Flare Scientists + Lysandre himself.
The boss gauntlet
| Trainer | Roster | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aliana (Team Flare Scientist) Flare | Mightyena Lv 48 (approximate — exact lab roster varies by source) | Same Mightyena from Phase 5 — slightly higher level. Bring Fairy/Fighting. |
| Mable (Team Flare Scientist) Flare | Houndoom Lv 48 | Same fight as Frost Cavern but she's back. Gives you the Elevator Key on defeat — required to reach the lower floors. |
| Celosia (Team Flare Scientist) Flare | Manectric Lv 46, Drapion Lv 48 | Drapion is Dark/Poison — bring Fairy or Fighting + Ground. |
| Bryony (Team Flare Scientist) Flare | Liepard Lv 46, Bisharp Lv 48 | Bisharp's Sucker Punch + Iron Head. Bring Fire/Fighting. |
| Xerosic (Team Flare Scientist) Flare | Crobat Lv 46, Malamar Lv 48 | ★ Crobat's Cross Poison + Acrobatics is fast and chips. Malamar's Contrary (boost on stat drop) + Superpower is the threat — Superpower's Atk/Def drop becomes a boost. Bring Fairy/Psychic. |
| Lysandre (Lab boss #1) Flare | Mienfoo Lv 45, Murkrow Lv 45, Pyroar Lv 47, Gyarados Lv 49 | ★ ★ First Lysandre fight. Gyarados Intimidate + Crunch + Aqua Tail. Bring Electric (Mega Ampharos / Heliolisk / Thunderbolt user). |
Team Flare Secret HQ (Geosenge)
Fly to Geosenge Town. The hidden entrance is in the NW stone formation that was sealed in Phase 3. You and Calem/Serena enter together. The HQ is a multi-floor elevator dungeon with several Multi-Battles before the legendary chamber.
HQ trainer structure
Multiple grunts and Admins lining the walkway. Calem/Serena teams up with you for the multi-battles. Expect:
- 2–3 single Grunt battles (Lv 45–48 mons)
- 2 multi-battles (you + ally vs 2 Grunts/Admins)
- 1–2 more solo Admin fights (Lv 48–50 mons)
- Mable gives you the Elevator Key (if not collected at Labs)
Xerneas / Yveltal — Box Legendary Catch
At the bottom of the HQ is a glowing chamber housing the legendary. The legendary is locked into the bottom of the cage — you can save before, then trigger the encounter, weaken, and capture.
Xerneas (Pokémon X exclusive)
Moves: Take Down, Aurora Beam, Geomancy, Megahorn (approx).
Geomancy: Charges turn 1, boosts Sp.Atk + Sp.Def + Speed +2 turn 2. Insanely strong setup.
Catch tip: Use False Swipe to chip to 1 HP, paralyze with Thunder Wave / sleep with Sleep Powder, then throw Ultra Balls. Repeat Balls work great if Xerneas is in your Pokédex (it should be — boss fight registers).
Master Ball: ★ This is the canonical Master Ball target if you didn't burn it on Mewtwo. Save scum first.
Yveltal (Pokémon Y exclusive)
Moves: Oblivion Wing, Dark Pulse, Hurricane, Snarl (approx).
Oblivion Wing: Recovers 75% of damage dealt — Yveltal heals through long fights. Dark Aura boosts Dark moves to 1.33× for everyone in battle (including you).
Catch tip: Same False Swipe + status + Ultra Ball plan. Repeat Balls work if registered.
Master Ball target? ★ Strong choice on Y, same as Xerneas on X.
- Save your game BEFORE entering the chamber.
- Lead with a False Swipe user (Pangoro, Bisharp, Gallade — anything with False Swipe TM). Chip Xerneas/Yveltal to 1 HP.
- Switch to a status user — Smeargle or Klefki with Thunder Wave / Sleep Powder. Paralyze or sleep the legendary.
- Start throwing balls: Ultra Ball, Dusk Ball (if in a cave — but the chamber is bright, so Ultra is better), Timer Ball (better after 10+ turns).
- If you have Master Ball from the Poké Ball Factory: 100% catch, no risk.
- If you KO it by accident: It respawns in the chamber — walk back in. You don't lose the chance.
Lysandre Final Boss
Immediately after you capture the box legendary, Lysandre confronts you for the final battle. His team has Mega Evolved Gyarados.
| Pokémon | Lv | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mienshao | 49 | Fighting | Evolved from Mienfoo. Regenerator + Reckless. High Jump Kick recoil if it misses. |
| Honchkrow | 49 | Dark/Flying | Evolved from Murkrow. Moxie / Super Luck. Sucker Punch + Night Slash. |
| Pyroar | 51 | Fire/Normal | Rivalry + Unnerve. Hyper Voice + Flamethrower. Bring Rock/Ground. |
| Mega Gyarados ★ | 53 | Water/Dark (Mega) | ★ ★ ★ Lysandre's ace. Mold Breaker (ignores abilities). Crunch + Aqua Tail + Ice Fang + Dragon Dance. Bring Electric (Mega Ampharos / Heliolisk / TM24 Thunderbolt user) — super-effective after it Mega Evolves. Fighting STAB is also 2× super-effective. Avoid: Greninja's Dark moves (resisted), Mega Lucario if it lacks Fighting coverage. |
Recommended counters for Mega Gyarados specifically
- Mega Ampharos with Thunderbolt — ★ ★ ★ super-effective damage, excellent bulk, and no fear of Aqua Tail.
- Heliolisk with Thunderbolt — same logic.
- Any Pokémon holding the Magnet held item + Thunderbolt TM24 — boost helps.
- Mega Lucario with Power-Up Punch ramp — Fighting STAB 2×; Mold Breaker ignores Intimidate.
- Garchomp with Stone Edge — Rock 2× and Garchomp outspeeds Mega Gyarados pre-Dragon-Dance.
Route 18 — Vallée Étroite Way
A narrow valley route connecting Geosenge area to Couriway Town. Light trainer density, items in puddles.
Trainers on Route 18
| Trainer | Roster (approximate) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hex Maniac / Roller Skater / Fishermen mix | Lv 45–50 various | Generic patrols. Worth XP. Specific names vary by source. |
Items on Route 18
| Item | Where |
|---|---|
| Various items + Dowsing finds | Visible / hidden along path |
Couriway Town
A small town built around two cascading waterfalls. Pokémon Center, Mart, a few NPCs.
Route 19 — Grande Vallée Way (Shauna Rival)
Wide grassland leading to Snowbelle. Multiple rival battles back-to-back here — Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor all fight you on this route. After defeating Shauna, you receive HM05 Waterfall.
Trainers on Route 19
| Trainer | Roster | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shauna (Rival) Rival | Goodra Lv 49, Delcatty Lv 49, Starter Lv 51 (the one weak to yours) | ★ Tough fight. Goodra is bulky special Dragon. Bring Fairy/Ice. ★ ★ Gives you HM05 Waterfall after defeat. |
| Tierno (Rival) Rival | Talonflame Lv 48, Crawdaunt Lv 52, Roserade Lv 49 | Mixed roster. Crawdaunt's Crabhammer hurts. |
| Trevor (Rival) Rival | Raichu Lv 49, Aerodactyl Lv 49, Florges Lv 51 | Aerodactyl is fast Rock/Flying — Tough Claws. Florges is a Fairy wall. |
Items on Route 19
| Item | Where |
|---|---|
| HM05 Waterfall | From Shauna after rival battle |
| Star Piece / hidden items | Various Dowsing spots |
Snowbelle City (Wulfric Missing)
A snow-covered city built into the mountains. When you arrive, the gym is closed — Wulfric is missing. He's gone into the Winding Woods searching for a Pokémon. You need to find him.
Snowbelle stops
Route 20 + Pokémon Village
Route 20 is the Winding Woods — a maze-like forest with looping paths. The compass spins randomly inside (homage to FRLG's Lost Cave), but the route is short. Through the woods you reach the Pokémon Village.
Pokémon Village
A secluded sanctuary where abandoned and feral Pokémon live in peace. Wulfric is here, communing with the Pokémon. Talk to him — he heads back to Snowbelle to give you a proper gym fight.
Wild Pokémon in Pokémon Village
Rare and unusual encounters here — Zoroark (rare), Ditto, Lickitung, Amoonguss, Noctowl, Gothitelle/Reuniclus (version-dependent). Worth a few minutes if you want to round out your Pokédex.
Version exclusives in Pokémon Village
Snowbelle Gym — Wulfric, the Iceberg Leader
Wulfric — Snowbelle City Gym
Gym puzzle: An ice-slide gym. Step onto an ice tile and you slide in that direction until hitting something. Plan paths to land on the trainer tiles, then progress to Wulfric. Five Bergmite line the central paths as flavor.
Wulfric's team
| Pokémon | Lv | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
![]() Abomasnow |
56 | Grass/Ice | Snow Warning. Wood Hammer + Ice Shard + Sheer Cold (1HKO move RNG). 4× weak to Fire. Bring Charizard/Talonflame. |
![]() Cryogonal |
55 | Ice | Levitate (immune to Ground). Frost Breath + Ice Beam + Sharpen + Reflect. Special wall, but takes Fire/Fighting/Rock for 2×. |
![]() Avalugg |
59 | Ice | ★ Her ace. Own Tempo / Ice Body / Sturdy. Avalanche + Crunch + Ice Fang + Curse. ★ ★ The highest-level pre-Champion Pokémon at any gym. 184 base Defense. Bring strong Fire/Steel/Fighting/Rock. |
Gym trainers (verified Ace Trainers)
| Trainer | Roster | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace Trainer Imelda pink platform left | Sneasel Lv 54, Cloyster Lv 55 | Cloyster's Shell Smash + Icicle Spear is brutal. Lead with Fighting. |
| Ace Trainer Viktor | Delibird Lv 54, Mamoswine Lv 55 | Mamoswine's Earthquake + Ice Shard. Bring Grass. |
| Ace Trainer Shannon | Cryogonal Lv 52, Piloswine Lv 53, Jynx Lv 54 | Triple Ice roster. |
| Ace Trainer Theo | Beartic Lv 54, Vanilluxe Lv 55 | Slush Rush in Hail (after Abomasnow). Be careful. |
Threat assessment
| Pokémon | Threat | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Abomasnow | Medium | Sets Hail (chip damage). Sheer Cold is a one-shot RNG move — 30% accuracy normally, but check for any boost. Bring Fire. |
| Cryogonal | Medium | Sharpen + Reflect setup. Frost Breath always crits. Bring physical Fire/Fighting/Rock. |
| Avalugg | Very High | ★ ★ ★ Lv 59. Massive Defense. Curse boosts further. Crunch hits Ghosts hard. Bring Fire/Steel/Fighting STAB special moves — physical attackers struggle through Avalugg's 184 Def. |
Recommended counters (in order)
| Counter | Why | Recommended moves |
|---|---|---|
| Mega Charizard Y | ★ ★ ★ Drought boosts Fire moves (and counters Hail). Fire Blast + Solar Beam (Solar Beam 1-turn in sun). Abomasnow 4× weak to Fire = OHKO. | Fire Blast, Solar Beam, Flamethrower |
| Talonflame with Brave Bird + Flame Charge | ★ ★ Fire is 4× on Abomasnow and Flying is 2×. Watch Avalugg's physical bulk. | Brave Bird, Flame Charge |
| Heracross (Y) with Megahorn / Stone Edge | Bug is 2× on Abomasnow. Stone Edge handles Cryogonal, while Close Combat is better into Avalugg. | Megahorn, Stone Edge, Close Combat |
| Mega Lucario with Aura Sphere + Bullet Punch | Fighting 2× on all three. Aura Sphere special bypasses Avalugg's Def. | Aura Sphere, Bullet Punch |
| Mega Gengar with Sludge Bomb + Thunderbolt | Shadow Tag traps Avalugg. Sludge Bomb 2× on Grass/Ice. Avoid Crunch. | Sludge Bomb, Shadow Ball |
| Aegislash with Iron Head + Sacred Sword | Steel 2× on Ice. Sacred Sword's Fighting STAB ignores Avalugg's Curse boost. | Iron Head, Sacred Sword, Shadow Sneak |
| Pyroar / Delphox / Mega Charizard X | Fire STAB. Mega Charizard X's Flare Blitz one-shots Abomasnow. | Flare Blitz, Mystical Fire, Hyper Voice |
Avoid leading with
- Garchomp — Ice 4× weak. Avalanche from Avalugg one-shots. Bench.
- Greninja (Water primary) — Cryogonal's Ice resists Water; Avalugg's Crunch hurts. Bench unless Protean Dark works (Dark resisted by Ice).
- Goodra / Goomy line — Dragon 2× Ice. Avoid.
- Hawlucha — Flying weak to Ice. Bench.
- Floette / Sylveon — Fairy is fine but Abomasnow resists Fairy. Subpar.
Reward
- Iceberg Badge — ★ ★ ★ All traded Pokémon now obey, regardless of level. The final trade-obedience badge.
- TM13 Ice Beam — 90 power Ice coverage with 10% freeze. Great on Greninja, Lapras, and other compatible special attackers.
- Prize money — 9,440 P.
Team Recommendations
Phase 8's lineup needs to handle Ice (Wulfric), Mega Gyarados (Lysandre), and Dark+Poison (Team Flare admins). Lock your final 6 by now.
| Slot | Pokémon | Reasoning | Target Lv |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your starter (Greninja / Delphox / Chesnaught — fully evolved + signature move) | Greninja's Dark Pulse on Ghosts, Delphox's Mystical Fire on Ice/Bug, Chesnaught's Spiky Shield + Wood Hammer for tank-busting. | Lv 55+ |
| 2 | Mega Ampharos with Thunderbolt + Dragon Pulse | ★ ★ ★ Crushes Mega Gyarados, Sigilyph-style Flying mons, Gyarados-like specials. | Lv 50+ |

| 4 | Mega Lucario or Aegislash (with Dusk Stone if acquired — Terminus Cave in Phase 9 area, or post-game) | Mega Lucario for Champion-tier sweeping. Aegislash for Stance Change wall. | Lv 53+ |
| 5 | Mega Charizard Y (if you took Charmander on Y) OR Mega Charizard X (X) | ★ Y is Wulfric's nemesis. X is the universal physical Mega. | Lv 55+ |
| 6 (flex) | Heracross (Y) / Mega Gengar / Garchomp / box legendary (Xerneas Lv 50) | Xerneas with Geomancy + Moonblast + Megahorn is a 1v6 sweeper if set up. Use it! | Lv 50+ |
Box legendary in your team?
Xerneas/Yveltal are caught at Lv 50 mid-Phase 8. They're absolutely strong enough to slot into your team for the rest of the run. Xerneas with Geomancy (1-turn charge, +2 Sp.Atk/Sp.Def/Speed) is a near-guaranteed sweeper. Yveltal with Oblivion Wing heals itself as it attacks.
