Route 42 — Suicune Sighting

Travel east toward Mahogany along Route 42 (the western mouth of Mt. Mortar is here too). In a small grove blocked by a Cut tree you spot Suicune again — chop the tree and it dashes off, advancing the arc toward its Tin Tower catch.

Mahogany and Lake of RageNormal — Red Gyarados

Mahogany's "souvenir shop" is a front for a Team Rocket base broadcasting a radio signal that force-evolves Magikarp. North via Route 43 is the Lake of RageNormal, churning with angry Gyarados — including a famous one.

Red Gyarados
Red Gyarados
Water/Flying · Lake of RageNormal center · Lv 30 · ★ shiny, one-time
Missable: The Red (shiny) Gyarados is a single static Lv 30 encounter in the middle of the Lake of RageNormal. It's the guaranteed shiny of the game — save before you SurfWater into it and don't KO it. A weak status (Thunder WaveElectric) + a Great/Ultra Ball locks it. Afterward, a fisherman gives you a Red Scale (trade it in Blackthorn for an Exp. Share-type reward).

Talk to Lance at the lake — he's investigating the signal and leads the assault on the Mahogany hideout with you.

Team Rocket HQ — Mahogany

Drop into the hideout beneath the shop. The dungeon gates are powered by Electrode generators — find the passwords (from a chatty Rocket and a Voltorb-laden room) and shut down the three generators, fighting grunts, scientists, and executives along the way. Lance and his Dragonite back you up.

Optimal call: Bring Ground/Fighting for the Electrode and Steel-ish defenders, and keep your team topped up — it's a long dungeon with no PC mid-way. Clearing the HQ stops the radio signal and earns you HM06 WhirlpoolWater from Lance.

Goldenrod Radio Tower — The Clear Bell

Team Rocket isn't done — they seize the Goldenrod Radio Tower. FlyFlying to Goldenrod, grab the Card/Basement Key from the Goldenrod Underground, and storm the tower floor by floor, beating the executives (a fake "director," then Archer). Free the real director.

Heads up — Crystal vs Gold/Silver: In Crystal the rescued director hands you the Clear Bell (the key to Suicune at the Tin Tower). In Gold/Silver this step gave the Rainbow Wing instead — that's a different game. In Crystal the Rainbow Wing for Ho-Oh comes much later, from Eusine in Celadon after you've caught all three beasts (Phase 11).

Tin Tower — Catch Suicune

With the Clear Bell, FlyFlying to Ecruteak and enter the Tin Tower. The Wise Trio (Sages) test you at the entrance — beat them, then meet Suicune in the foyer. This is its only catchable encounter.

Suicune
Suicune
Water · Tin Tower foyer · Lv 40 · ★ fixed, permanently missable
Missable — the big one: Unlike the roaming beasts, Suicune won't flee here, but if you knock it out it's gone for good. Save right before the foyer. Lead with a status move (Thunder WaveElectric/Sleep), chip with weak attacks, and bring 15–20 Ultra Balls (or use the Master Ball if you saved it). Full plan in the Legendary Reference.

Team Recommendations

Fighting or Fire or Rock for Pryce: ★ All beat Ice — Heracross/Hitmon, Growlithe/Typhlosion, or a Rock attacker.
Electric (Magnemite/Lanturn): Great on Pryce's Water/Ice seals and useful into Kanto's Water/Flying leaders.
A dedicated catcher: Status user + weak attacker for Suicune and the roaming beasts — keep that Fast Ball/Master Ball handy.
Red Gyarados (optional): A free strong Water/Flying attacker if you want it on the team.

Gym Strategy - Pryce, The Ice Leader

Gym puzzle: Slide across the ice to clear the path (the gym opens only after you've cleared the Rocket HQ).

Fighting covers the full team. Electric deletes the seals, but Piloswine needs Water, Grass, Fire, or Fighting.

Piloswine Piloswine Lv 31 MovesIcy WindFury AttackMistBlizzard Read★ Ace — Blizzard hits hard and can freeze.

How to win: A Fighting-type hits all three super-effectively. Electric shreds the Water/Ice seals; Fire/Rock also beat Ice. For Piloswine (Ice/Ground), avoid relying on Electric — use Water, Grass, Fire, or Fighting. Watch freeze chances and carry an Ice Heal.

Heads up: The seals' RestPsychic can drag the fight out — bring enough damage to break through, and don't let Piloswine's BlizzardIce freeze your sweeper.

Time / Day Window

WindowWhat it gates
Story orderPryce's gym only opens after the Mahogany Rocket HQ is cleared.
Story orderSuicune's Tin Tower catch needs the Clear Bell — i.e., beat Pryce and clear the Radio Tower first.
Any timeRaikou/Entei still roam — a great moment to finally corner one with a Fast Ball.

Legendary Note

Phase 7 is the Suicune payoff. After Pryce + the Radio Tower you get the Clear Bell, beat the Wise Trio at the Tin Tower, and catch Suicune (Lv 40) in the foyer — its one and only chance, so save first. The roaming Raikou and Entei are still out there to mop up whenever you like. Ho-Oh is not available yet: its Rainbow Wing comes from Eusine in Celadon only after all three beasts are caught (Phase 11). See the Legendary Reference.

HM Update

Unlocked this phase: HM06 WhirlpoolWater (from Lance after the Mahogany HQ), usable with the Glacier Badge. It opens whirlpool tiles — needed for the Whirl Islands (Lugia) and several Kanto water routes. Coverage: FlashNormal + Cut + SurfWater + FlyFlying + Strength + WhirlpoolWater. Only WaterfallWater (HM07) remains, in the Ice Path next phase.

Phase 7 Checklist

  • Saw Suicune on Route 42 (Cut tree) and reached Mahogany.
  • Caught the Red Gyarados at the Lake of RageNormal (saved first!).
  • Cleared the Mahogany Rocket HQ with Lance → got HM06 WhirlpoolWater.
  • Beat Pryce → Glacier Badge + TM16 Icy WindIce.
  • Cleared the Goldenrod Radio Tower → received the Clear Bell.
  • Beat the Wise Trio and caught Suicune at the Tin Tower (Lv 40).
